According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a child’s first visit to the pediatric dentist should ideally be on his or her first birthday and certainly should not be delayed beyond the age of 3 years.
A child’s first visit to the pediatric dentist should be made at an early age for prevention reasons, to protect the child’s new teeth against caries and to ensure the good health of the permanent teeth that will grow later, as well as for psychological reasons, since a preventive examination at an early age is clearly a simpler and more pleasant experience than a filling or even worse than an extraction, and can pave the way for the development of a very good relationship between the child and the paediatric dentist.

Before a child’s first visit to our clinic, we would advise parents NOT to try to prepare the child, as this often creates anxiety and fear in the child and can have the opposite of the desired results. We would recommend that they settle for a simple explanation, such as, for example, “We’re going to the doctor to have your teeth measured.”
During a child’s first visit to the Happy Tooth Clinic, parents are first of all asked to inform the pediatric dentist about the child’s general health, so that she can proceed with the examination, having a complete picture of her little patient.
Then, our pediatric dentist proceeds with the examination – which is done in the form of a game – making sure that the whole process is a pleasant experience for the child. More specifically, the pediatric dentist performs the first preventive dental check, cleaning and fluoridation of the child’s teeth, while if he/she deems it necessary, he/she may also proceed to an X-ray check.
As a rule, at the Happy Tooth Clinic, the parent is encouraged to remain in the examination room throughout the examination. In some cases, however, the paediatric dentist may consider it necessary to remove the parent from the examination room – always with the parent’s consent, of course – in order to benefit the examination process of the young patient.

After the examination at the first visit, our pediatric dentist gives the parents the necessary instructions for maintaining good oral hygiene and if a problem is detected, she draws up a treatment plan, always adapted to the case and the needs of each child.
