Breastfeeding Finger

Finger sucking is a basic instinct of infants.

This habit makes them feel safe and relaxes them especially when they are in unfamiliar surroundings, when they are tired or when they are sleeping. However, prolonged thumb sucking can cause problems related to the proper development of the jaws and the correct distribution of teeth in the dental barrier.

These problems can be either the abnormal protrusion of the upper jaw and its teeth (prognathism) or the existence of a gap between the front teeth when the child closes the mouth. Of course, it should be noted that if the child stops the harmful habit, the damage usually largely repairs itself. But when the child continues beyond the age of 4 years then parents should help the child to break the habit. However, too much pressure can do more harm than good.

TIPS

  • It is important to reward the child for the moments when he does not suckle his pacifier or finger instead of scolding him for not doing so.
  • Children often suckle their fingers when they feel insecure and stressed. We should therefore pay attention to the cause of their anxiety and attempt to break the habit at times when the child is relaxed such as summer holidays.
  • We must praise the child for his or her slightest effort.
  • The paediatric dentist can also encourage the child to stop the habit by explaining what could happen to their teeth if they continue. If these approaches do not work, more practical measures such as special nail polish or an orthodontic appliance that prevents the finger from going into the mouth are recommended. To get results, however, it is essential that the child understands that our goal is to help him or her.
